ASS subtitle format
Overview
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a subtitle format known for its rich styling and positioning capabilities. It is widely used in anime fansubbing and broadcast workflows where precise control over subtitle appearance matters.
- Extension:
.ass - Predecessor: SSA (SubStation Alpha)
- Complexity: High
- Browser support: None natively (requires conversion)
Structure
ASS files have three sections:
- [Script Info] — metadata and resolution.
- [V4+ Styles] — named text styles with fonts, colors, positions.
- [Events] — dialogue cues with timing and style references.
[Script Info] Title: Example ScriptType: v4.00+ PlayResX: 1920 PlayResY: 1080 [V4+ Styles] Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, ... Style: Default,Arial,48,&H00FFFFFF,... Styling and positioning
ASS supports:
- Font styling — font family, size, weight, color.
- Positioning — absolute X/Y coordinates or margins.
- Karaoke effects — per-syllable highlighting.
- Drawing commands — vector graphics embedded in subtitles.
- Animation — fade-in, fade-out, position movement.
- Fades and blurs — visual effects on text.
When to use ASS
- Anime fansubbing — the dominant format for fansub releases.
- Broadcast — where styling matters for visual consistency.
- Content with complex on-screen text — signs, translations that need positioning.
- Karaoke subtitles — the format handles per-syllable timing.
When not to use ASS
- Web video (HTML5) — browsers do not natively render ASS. Convert to WebVTT first.
- Streaming platforms — most require SRT, WebVTT or a proprietary format.
- YouTube uploads — YouTube does not accept ASS.
- Simple dialogue content — the complexity is unnecessary for standard subtitles.
Conversion
Subtitle Convert does not currently support ASS conversion. To convert ASS to SRT or VTT, use a dedicated subtitle editor:
- Aegisub — free, cross-platform, the standard ASS editor.
- Subtitle Edit — free, Windows, handles ASS well.
- FFmpeg — command-line conversion:
ffmpeg -i input.ass output.srt.
Note that ASS → SRT conversion loses styling, positioning and effects. If the styling matters, you must burn in the subtitles rather than convert.
SSA vs ASS
SSA is the predecessor format. ASS extends SSA with more features and is the current standard. Most modern tools treat SSA and ASS as effectively the same format and can open both. SSA files are rarely created today; new work should use ASS.
