Common problems
My subtitle file won't load in a video player
Most often this is an encoding issue or a malformed cue. Try in order:
- Run the file through the Encoding Cleaner to strip BOM and normalize line endings.
- Run the file through the SRT Validator or VTT Validator to see structural errors.
- Try playing it in a different player (VLC is a good reference) to see if the issue is player-specific.
Subtitles are out of sync
If the offset is constant, use the SRT Time Shifter. If the drift is progressive, you need a linear retime tool (not available here). See the diagnostic guide.
Text displays garbled
The file is likely saved in a non-UTF-8 encoding. Re-save as UTF-8 in your text editor. If that fails, the file may already be corrupted.
I can't convert my ASS/SSA file
ASS and SSA are not supported by Subtitle Convert. Use a dedicated editor like Aegisub or Subtitle Edit, or FFmpeg.
Text overflows off-screen
Lines are too long. Use the Line Length Checker to find overlong lines, then split them manually in an editor.
Subtitles show at wrong position
If you converted from ASS/SSA, positioning was dropped (SRT/VTT do not support it). If from VTT, check that cue settings were preserved.
