What gets cleaned

  • UTF-8 BOM (byte-order mark) that some players reject when it appears at the start of a file.
  • Zero-width characters including U+200B (zero-width space), U+200C (ZWNJ), U+200D (ZWJ), U+FEFF (BOM inside file) and U+2060 (word joiner).
  • Non-breaking spaces (U+00A0) converted to regular spaces.
  • Windows (CRLF) and classic Mac (CR) line endings normalized to Unix-style LF.

When to use it

  • Player refuses to load an SRT that looks correct in a text editor.
  • Dialogue lines appear to have extra spaces that cannot be selected.
  • A file transferred through email or a mobile app has invisible control characters.

Limitations

  • Non-UTF-8 encodings (Latin-1, Windows-1252) are not detected or converted. Files are always read as UTF-8.
  • Right-to-left marker characters are preserved.
